Israeli airstrikes kill 12 in Gaza, but ground fighting less intense
  • Airstrike kills journalist and her family, medics say
  • At least 12 killed so far on Monday, health officials say

CAIRO: Israeli airstrikes pounded areas across the Gaza Strip on Monday killing 12, including a journalist and her family, medics said, although the intensity of the ground offensive has subsided as Israel steps up its fight with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Palestinian health officials said Wafa Al-Udaini, who wrote articles about the war in English advocating the Palestinian viewpoint, was killed when a missile struck her house in the central city of Deir Al-Balah, also killing her husband and their two children.
There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military.
Udaini’s death raised the number of Palestinian journalists killed in the Israeli offensive since Oct. 7 to 174, the Hamas-run Gaza government media office said.
In another strike, a Palestinian was killed and several were wounded in Rafah, near the border with Egypt, while in the northern town of Beit Hanoun an airstrike killed one man and injured others, medics said.
While later on Monday, an Israeli air strike on a house in Nuseirat, one of Gaza Strip’s eight historic refugee camps, killed six people, health officials said.
Some residents said fighting and Israeli military activities in Gaza have declined slightly in the past week as Israel has escalated its military offensive against Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing its leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike on Friday. The group announced Nasrallah’s death on Saturday.
While the intensity of the ground offensive has been lower, Israel has kept up its airstrikes in the enclave, they added.
Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel for almost a year, in support of its ally Hamas in Gaza.
In the southern Gaza Strip, Israeli authorities released 12 Palestinians, including Khaled Al-Ser, head of the surgery unit at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, medics and Hamas media said. Palestinians freed by Israel have complained of torture and ill-treatment in Israeli jails, charges Israel denies.
Israel and Hamas have been fighting since gunmen from the Palestinian militant group stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and capturing about 250 hostages, going by Israeli tallies.
Most of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million has been displaced by the war, in which more than 41,500 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza health authorities.

Cyprus police arrest man on spying, terror charges
  • Police declined to provide extensive details, citing ā€œnational security,ā€œ
  • Local media said the suspect was seen acting suspiciously near a British air force base at Akrotiri

NICOSIA: Cyprus police said they arrested an individual on espionage and terror charges on Saturday, with local media reporting the suspect had ties to Iran.

Police declined to provide extensive details, citing ā€œnational security,ā€ but local media said the suspect was seen acting suspiciously near a British air force base at Akrotiri, outside the southern coastal city of Limassol.

Cypriot news outlet Philenews reported the man had links to ā€œIranian operativesā€ and had arrived on the Mediterranean island last month posing as a British tourist.

It said the arrest in Limassol on Saturday was based on information from a foreign intelligence service.

ā€œFollowing a coordinated operation today, an individual suspected of involvement in terrorism-related offenses was arrested,ā€ said a brief police announcement.

The suspect appeared before a district court and was issued an eight-day remand order for ā€œoffenses related, among others, to terrorism and espionage,ā€ the police statement added.

Philenews said high-resolution cameras, telephoto lenses, notes, computers and three mobile phones were discovered at the suspect’s apartment.

It described the suspect as being of Azeri descent, referring to an ethnic group present in Azerbaijan and northwest Iran.

The outlet also reported that two people believed to be linked to the case were arrested in Britain.

The British foreign and defense ministries did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Thanks to its location in the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus has become a key transit hub for third-country nationals fleeing the region since the recent outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Iran.

It has also become a staging post for Israelis seeking to return home by air or sea after being stranded abroad by the start of the fighting.

IAEA says centrifuge workshop at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site hit
  • ā€œThere was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences,ā€ Grossi said

VIENNA: The UN nuclear agency confirmed on Saturday that a centrifuge manufacturing workshop at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site had been hit, in the latest strike amid Israel’s bombing campaign.

ā€œA centrifuge manufacturing workshop has been hit in Esfahan, the third such facility that has been targeted in Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear-related sites over the past week,ā€ the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement quoting its chief Rafael Grossi.

ā€œWe know this facility well. There was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences,ā€ Grossi was quoted as saying.

Turkiye says Israel leading Middle East to ā€˜total disaster’
  • ā€œIsrael is now leading the region to the brink of total disaster,ā€ Fidan said
  • He called for an end to the ā€œunlimited aggressionā€ against Iran

ISATANBUL: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday accused Israel of leading the Middle East toward ā€œtotal disasterā€ by attacking Iran on June 13.

ā€œIsrael is now leading the region to the brink of total disaster by attacking Iran, our neighbor,ā€ he told a summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.

ā€œThere is no Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Yemeni or Iranian problem but there is clearly an Israeli problem,ā€ Fidan said.

He called for an end to the ā€œunlimited aggressionā€ against Iran.

ā€œWe must prevent the situation from deteriorating into a spiral of violence that would further jeopardize regional and global security,ā€ he added.

Speaking after Fidan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Western leaders of providing ā€œunconditional supportā€ to Israel.

He said Turkiye would not allow borders in the Middle East to be redrawn ā€œin blood.ā€

ā€œIt is vital for us to show more solidarity to end Israel’s banditry — not only in Palestine but also in Syria, in Lebanon and in Iran,ā€ he told the OIC’s 57 member countries.

The OIC, founded in 1969, says its mission is to ā€œsafeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.ā€
