No Saudi-Israeli normalization without Palestinian state: Prince Turki

No Saudi-Israeli normalization without Palestinian state: Prince Turki
  • Ex-intelligence chief: Kingdom has led the way in trying to resolve conflict
  • West has not done enough to pressure Israel; 鈥榮imply harsh talk鈥 has 鈥榞otten us nowhere鈥

LONDON: There will be no normalization of ties between 海角直播 and Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established, Prince Turki Al-Faisal, the former head of the Kingdom鈥檚 intelligence services, has warned.听

During a talk at London-based think tank Chatham House, the former Saudi ambassador to the US also discussed Washington鈥檚 role in the peace process as the Gaza war approaches its first anniversary, and how talks before the outbreak of hostilities had been broadly positive.

He said the US is keen on the resumption of talks between Israel and 海角直播 to strengthen regional security and to forge economic ties, but Riyadh鈥檚 position is that 鈥渋f there鈥檚 a Palestinian state that Israel accepts to come (into) existence, then we can talk about normalization with Israel.鈥

The prince added: 鈥淏efore Oct. 7 鈥 talks not only progressed along those lines, but also the Kingdom invited a Palestinian delegation to come and talk directly to the Americans about what it is that might bring about a Palestinian state.

鈥淚鈥檓 not privy to those talks so I don鈥檛 know what happened between the Palestinians and the Americans, but the Kingdom鈥檚 position has always been we won鈥檛 speak for the Palestinians. They have to do it for themselves.听Unfortunately, of course, the Oct. 7 (Hamas attack against Israel) put an end to those talks.鈥

Prince Turki said the establishment of a Palestinian state is not only crucial for Israeli ties with 海角直播 but with the rest of the Muslim world as well.

鈥淎 Palestinian state is a primary condition for 海角直播 to have normalization with Israel, but 鈥 on the Israeli side, the whole government is saying no Palestinian state,鈥 he added.

Prince Turki said for 海角直播, an independent Palestine would encapsulate the 1967 borders, including East Jerusalem.

He added that the Kingdom has led the way in trying to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict, citing the 1981 King Fahd Peace Plan and the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative proposed by King Abdullah.

During the current Gaza war, 鈥渢he Kingdom led the Muslim world, and not only summits with the Arabs but with the (rest of the) Muslim world, and also 鈥 the diplomatic missions that have been taking place to convince the world that there must be an end to the fighting, led by the Saudi foreign minister,鈥 Prince Turki said.

鈥淭he Kingdom has been in the forefront of condemning the Israeli onslaught on the Palestinians, not just in Gaza but equally in the West Bank.鈥

He criticized the US and other Western nations for not applying more pressure on Israel to end the war, citing how the UK had only recently begun to suspend certain arms export licenses to Israel following the election of a new government in July.

鈥淚鈥檇 like to see more done by the UK,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 think, for example, the UK 鈥 should recognize the state of Palestine. It鈥檚 long overdue.鈥

Prince Turki said the US could apply direct pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the actions of his government and military, and should address funding and lobbying by groups and individuals sympathetic to Israel.

鈥淚 think the US has enormous tools to affect Israel which it isn鈥檛 using, not just simply 鈥 denial of supply of weapons and material to the Israelis,鈥 the prince added.

鈥淎 lot of financial help goes to Israel from the US. If some of the privileges that (the) Israeli lobby, for example, in America, enjoys 鈥 of tax-free contributions to Israel 鈥 can be withdrawn from those Israeli lobbyists, that will (put) great pressure on Israel.鈥

In the US, 鈥測ou have to register as a lobbyist for a specific country, or be prosecuted, if you want to talk for that country, but a lot of organizations in America do that for Israel and still enjoy a tax-free status because they鈥檙e considered not representing Israel per se, but simply as philanthropic or humanitarian groupings,鈥 he said.

鈥淭here are many tools that are available to the US, not simply harsh talk, which seems to have gotten us nowhere. But is America ready to do that? As I said, I鈥檓 not too optimistic about that.鈥

Hunna mentorship program hits right notes for women in MENA
  • Six participants paired with experts from across music industry
  • Workshops cover production, live performance, artist strategy, global positioning

RIYADH: The women-led music initiative, Hunna, has launched its 2025 mentorship program and workshop series.

Now in its third year, the program connects women across the region with mentors, resources and networks to help them grow professionally. It has more than 120 members from 海角直播, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and elsewhere.

This year鈥檚 program began in July, with six participants paired with professionals from various musical disciplines. They will each receive monthly one-on-one mentorship and tailored development plans as well as access to Hunna鈥檚 wider programming.

The culmination of their hard work will be a showcase at this year鈥檚 XP Music Futures in December.

Mentorship program manager Nadia Khan, who also founded the nongovernmental organization Women in Ctrl, said: 鈥淭his year鈥檚 mentor-mentee pairings reflect the diversity of talent in the region and the global reach of the women guiding them.

鈥淗aving such inspirational and accomplished mentors means our mentees aren鈥檛 just receiving guidance, they鈥檙e learning directly from women who have carved their own paths in music, broken barriers and proven that it鈥檚 possible to thrive while staying true to your vision.鈥

This year鈥檚 pairings are: Tunisia-based Chaima Soudani with Celine Hitti, head of artist services MENA at Believe; singer Nadine Lingawi (Fulana) with Emmy-nominated composer and BBC Radio 3 presenter Hannah Peel; Egyptian multi-instrumentalist and producer Martina Ashraf with Montreal-based experimental electronic artist Liliane Chlela; Saudi composer and pianist Nora Aljebrin with Nadin Al-Khalidi, lead vocalist of Tarabband; DJ and producer Lena Chercaoui  with Saudi DJ and producer Cosmicat; and Palestinian-Jordanian vocalist Lina Sleibi with singer-songwriter and visual creative Lina Makoul.

The pairings were chosen through an anonymized selection process led by Hunna committee members and former participants.

鈥淗unna is about creating a space of solidarity and community where women can grow in every part of the music industry,鈥 Hitti said.

Al-Khalidi said: 鈥淚 joined the Hunna mentorship program to share my journey and inspire others to tell their own stories through music.鈥

Workshops are a core part of the program. The first, 鈥淚ntroduction to Music Production,鈥 will be held on Aug. 20 at Beast House in Riyadh.

Monthly sessions through November will cover production, live performance, artist strategy and global positioning. They will be accessible to all members of the Hunna community.

Tanya Awad, head of music and experience at XP Music Futures and MDLBeast Foundation, which leads the Hunna initiative, said: 鈥淥ur vision is clear: to see MENA women in every facet of the music industry.鈥
