DUBAI: Early on Saturday, as temperatures soared outside, a sprawling shopping center in Dubai echoed to the squeak of sneakers as hundreds of people joined 鈥淢allathon鈥 鈥 an indoor, air-conditioned race.
The government-backed initiative aims to encourage exercise during August, often the United Arab Emirates鈥 hottest month, and make use of Dubai鈥檚 giant malls which are otherwise empty at that time.
Running outside during summer in the Gulf, one of the world鈥檚 hottest regions where temperatures sometimes top 50C, is unpleasant and even unsafe for many.
鈥淚f you run outside, it鈥檚 not healthy at all because temperatures are around 40C to 50C,鈥 said one runner who gave his name as Rai, his platinum-blond hair pulled back with a headband.
Participants wearing 鈥淒ubai Mallathon鈥 T-shirts and sports gear ran and walked past closed stores along vacant, marbled halls that were set to be teeming with shoppers hours later.
Throughout August, nine of the city鈥檚 shopping centers 鈥 including the cavernous Dubai Mall, one of the world鈥檚 biggest 鈥 are open daily for runners and walkers from 7am-10am.
On weekends, runners can enter organized 10km, 5km or 2.5km races at designated malls, complete with podium presentations and prizes.
During Saturday鈥檚 race at the City Center Mirdif mall, two robots buzzed around the participants, who paused to take selfies with them.
Others waited in line to use electric bikes that powered blenders to make healthy smoothies.
Mallathon is backed by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, 42, whose public profile projects him as an exemplar of active living.
It is one of a number of attempts to steer Dubai鈥檚 car-loving, mall-rat population toward exercise, including the 30x30 challenge, where residents are encouraged to exercise 30 minutes a day for a month.
Obesity rates in the energy-rich Gulf country regularly top global charts.
A study published by The Lancet in March predicted a staggering 94 percent of UAE males would be overweight or obese by 2050 鈥 the highest in the world.
Partly to blame is the furnace-like heat that ravages the region for several months a year, and is steadily growing more intense.
The UAE had its hottest April on record this year, and then breached its May high two days in a row. On August 1, temperatures reached 51.8C, just shy of the national record of 52C.
Menna, a 36-year-old Egyptian who has lived in Dubai for 15 years, said there was 鈥渘o way鈥 she would exercise outside in the summer.
But in the mall, 鈥渨e have air-conditioning, first aid, water... there鈥檚 everything that you need.鈥
鈥淚t motivates you more when other people are doing it too,鈥 she added.
Fouzeya Faridoon, head of social activities at Dubai Sports Council, said more than 500 people had signed up for Saturday鈥檚 event, which was free.
鈥淭he idea is to encourage people to exercise, especially walking and running, even in the summer,鈥 she told AFP.
Children, men, women and at least one person with a disability were among the participants who collected a medal and a bag of freebies at the finish line.
Zamani, a Sri Lankan tourist, was one of the runners, along with her young children.
鈥淚 like the energy, everybody is all geared up,鈥 the 46-year-old said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very modern and chic.鈥

  • Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September鈥檚 international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed

LONDON: Manchester City midfielder Rodri will not be at full fitness until after September鈥檚 international break, Pep Guardiola has revealed.
The 2024 Ballon d鈥橭r winner missed most of last season due to ligament damage and without him City failed to mount a strong defense of their Premier League crown.
The 29-year-old Spanish international fought his way back to fitness but suffered a groin injury in City鈥檚 defeat to Saudi club Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup in the United States last month.
鈥淩odri鈥檚 getting better but he had a big injury in the last game against Al-Hilal and for the last five or six weeks,鈥 Guardiola said in comments released on Saturday.
鈥淗e鈥檚 training right now and in the last two or three days is better. Hopefully maybe the international break is when he will be really, really fit.
鈥淗opefully, in the games (prior to that) he can play some minutes but the important thing is to not have pain because we don鈥檛 want him to be come back and injured, come back and injured.
鈥淲e will try desperately to avoid that but he鈥檚 training the last two or three days with us and that鈥檚 good.鈥
The City staff are also nursing Phil Foden and Mateo Kovacic back to fitness and both players joined Rodri in being left out of a pre-season game in Sicily this week.
City face Wolves in their first Premier League game of the season next weekend and then play Tottenham and Brighton before the September internationals.

  • Garcia, the Fireballs GC captain, shot a 4-under 67 that was matched by Johnson, the 4Aces captain, for a share of the lead at a challenging Bolingbrook Golf Club

BOLINGBROOK: Sergio Garcia may be regaining his form from earlier this season. Dustin Johnson may be rounding into form.

In Friday鈥檚 first round at LIV Golf Chicago, the two captains and major champions showed they鈥檙e ready to make plenty of noise as the 2025 season nears its conclusion.

Garcia, the Fireballs GC captain, shot a 4-under 67 that was matched by Johnson, the 4Aces captain, for a share of the lead at a challenging Bolingbrook Golf Club. The two will start Saturday鈥檚 second Round 1 stroke ahead of a six-player chase pack that includes four other major champions: Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm.

On the team leaderboard, South African Stinger GC shot a cumulative 6 under to lead by one stroke over Garcia鈥檚 Fireballs, with Johnson鈥檚 4Aces and DeChambeau鈥檚 Crushers tied for third at 3 under. The Stingers are looking to break a drought of 31 tournaments without a team win.

Two weeks ago at LIV Golf UK by JCB, Johnson finished last in the 54-man field but bounced back on Friday thanks mostly to a nine-hole stretch in which he posted five birdies. It鈥檚 the second time this season he鈥檚 gone from worst in one tournament to the lead in the first round of the next tournament. He finished 54th in Hong Kong, then had the solo lead after 18 holes in Singapore, eventually tying for fifth.

鈥淭o be honest, even in the UK, I did not play nearly as bad as my score,鈥 Johnson said. 鈥淚 know my score was horrible, but I actually hit a lot of good shots.鈥

He鈥檚 been hitting plenty of good shots lately. Prior to the UK event, he had finished in the top 10 in three of five starts, his best stretch this season as he chases his first win of 2025. He certainly hit some terrific shots Friday, despite windy conditions and tough pin placements. His irons were especially on point, as he hit 14 greens in regulation, tying for second-most in the field.

鈥淚t鈥檚 close,鈥 Johnson said when asked about his form. 鈥淚 feel like I鈥檓 always close, and it only takes a couple shots here or there where my game just clicks back and I start playing good again.鈥

Garcia won earlier this year in Hong Kong during a stretch in which his Fireballs claimed three consecutive team titles. But the legendary Spaniard鈥檚 form fell off during the middle part of the season.

Always a great ball-striker, Garcia found his putting stroke Friday, as he needed just 23 putts, tying for fewest in the field. Entering the tournament ranked sixth in the season-long points race, Garcia is now projected to move into fourth place.

鈥淚鈥檝e been working very hard on all parts of my game,鈥 he said. 鈥淭oday, I felt like I hit the ball pretty much as well as I hit the ball at the beginning of the year 鈥 I hit several shots very, very close, so obviously on the conditions that we had today, if you have five or six tap-ins for birdie, that helps a lot.鈥

Among the chasers, the most intriguing development concerns the Individual Championship race. Rahm is tied for third on the Chicago leaderboard while points leader Joaquin Niemann 鈥 a five-time winner this season 鈥 is tied for 45th after shooting a 74.

If Rahm wins this week and Niemann finishes no better than 18th, then Rahm takes over the lead entering the decisive event next week at the regular-season finale at LIV Golf Indianapolis. According to LIV Golf data experts, Rahm increased his chances of catching Niemann from 15 percent to 30 percent after Friday鈥檚 round.

Others have plenty to play for, too, including the 55-year-old Mickelson, the six-time major winner who is having his best season on LIV Golf. He started the week 20th in points but is projected to 11th after shooting a 68 in which he was bogey-free for the first 14 holes. He鈥檇 love to finish inside the top 10 in the season-long race.

鈥淚鈥檝e played well this year, played consistent,鈥 he said. 鈥淎t 55, I think that鈥檚 a cool accomplishment, and I would love to finish this year off right.鈥

TEAM SCORES

LIV Golf鈥檚 scoring format involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. Here are the results and scores for each team after Friday鈥檚 Round 1 of LIV Golf Chicago.

  • Manchester City were tipped last season to win a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title
  • But a mid-season nose-dive saw them fall well off the pace and miss a top-two spot for the first time since 2016-17

MANCHESTER, England: Manchester City will embark on a new era this season in their first in 10 years without talisman Kevin De Bruyne as Pep Guardiola looks to make last term鈥檚 third-place finish a distant memory and restore his revamped outfit to their former glory.

They face a tough task against champions Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea 鈥 all big spenders in the transfer window 鈥 but the anticipated return of Ballon d鈥橭r winner Rodri and scoring machine Erling Haaland to top form give reason for optimism.

City were tipped last season to win a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title, but a mid-season nose-dive saw them fall well off the pace and miss a top-two spot for the first time since 2016-17.

They finished third behind Liverpool and Arsenal with their worst points total under Guardiola, their nine league losses were more than their two previous seasons combined, they crashed out of the Champions League and League Cup early and their FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace meant no silverware for the first time in eight years.

Rodri was sidelined for most of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament against Arsenal in September. Guardiola鈥檚 men showed how much the Spaniard was missed when they went on a woeful run of nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions.

After leading the Premier League in scoring for two successive seasons, Haaland鈥檚 31 goals across all competitions in 2024-25 remarkably constituted a drop in performance, although he still showed his lethal scoring ability in what was considered an off-year for the Norwegian.

He will be keen to prove a point this season and put himself back in the running for the Golden Boot.

Guardiola began his rebuilding last term, splashing out 拢180 million ($241.72 million) on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez and Vitor Reis. Marmoush had an almost immediate impact with a 13-minute hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Newcastle United in February.

City鈥檚 manager has further galvanized his squad by signing Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, winger Rayan Cherki and goalkeeper James Trafford in the close season to push City鈥檚 spending for 2025 past the 拢300 million mark.

Ait-Nouri was brought in to reinforce the left-back position, while Reijnders and Cherki were signed in the hope that they could replace De Bruyne鈥檚 creative spark in midfield.

Squad positivity

While City boast one of the best strikers in the game in Haaland, the fight to support the 25-year-old runs deep with Marmoush, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Oscar Bobb and Cherki all in contention.

Guardiola said that while there is a lot of positivity in the squad, he did not expect this season to be smooth sailing.

鈥淚鈥檓 pretty sure it鈥檒l be good, but it won鈥檛 be a red carpet season, there鈥檒l always be problems, it鈥檚 how you overcome those situations,鈥 the Spaniard said at a sold-out open training session earlier this week.

鈥淭he expectation at the beginning of the season is always, let鈥檚 go and try to do our best, win the first games, get confidence and move forward. Of course, we want to try and do better than last season, especially with consistency.鈥

The manager, who is under contract until June 2027, is not setting any targets for the season, saying it is difficult to determine what a successful campaign would be.

鈥淲hen the (players) give good spirit and fight and run and give their best, sometimes you can do your best and the opponents are just better,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t depends on ourselves, this is what we have to try to do. We challenge against ourselves, this is the target for the season.鈥

A cloud continues to hang over the club as they face 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial regulations. City, who have always denied any wrongdoing, were charged with the alleged breaches in February 2023. British media expect a verdict during the October international break.
