  • Empowerment of youth a common thread between 海角直播 and China, says CEO

RIYADH: An online teaching platform is strengthening Saudi children鈥檚 educational journeys while also unleashing the potential of local and international educators.

Cindy Mi, an English teacher for 25 years who founded VIPKid a decade ago and brought the company to 海角直播 about two years ago, told Arab News: 鈥淚鈥檝e always been a student and a teacher myself. The goal is to build a global classroom to allow more children to get access to best quality language learning educational experiences 鈥 so they can be ready for their more globalized future.鈥

Since its founding in 2013, VIPKid has helped more than 1 million children worldwide learn English and delivered over 280 million live online classes in English and Mandarin.

The CEO was inspired to expand the platform to the region after speaking on a Future Investment Initiative session about the future of education with Saudi Ambassador to the US Princess Reema bint Bandar.

Reflecting on her discussion with Princess Reema, Mi said: 鈥淗er vision of empowering women and especially the youth of the Kingdom for the future was truly an inspiration.鈥

She added that Saudi Vision 2030鈥檚 goal to improve education was also part of the inspiration.

I can totally see so many women in the Kingdom, in the region, teach children around the globe and share the wonderful culture with the world.

Cindy Mi, VIPKid CEO

鈥淲e are very happy and honored to support the initiative by providing the children of the Kingdom with the highest quality language tutors from the US or from China, learning Mandarin Chinese and English, so that the children can be well prepared for the future.鈥

Over the years, VIPKid has built more than 10 core language-learning modules. It also offers over 1,800 supplemental elective classes for learning English and Mandarin.

VIPKid launched a pilot training program for local English teachers in 2023. It ended last month, and was designed to raise the standard for both proficiency and pedagogy.

Mi added that VIPKid鈥檚 multicultural programs allow experienced teachers from all over the world to meet with their Saudi counterparts in order to share best practices, improve subject matter competency and gain confidence in the classroom.

鈥淲e work with partners like government bodies, educational institutions and other tech companies so that we can help them launch similar programs, especially in the field of teacher training.鈥

In order to help students learn better at school, teachers also need to learn themselves, which requires investment, Mi said. 鈥淚 think the Kingdom has invested a lot (in) teachers 鈥 it is very helpful for them to improve their language proficiency with a peer from other parts of the world.鈥

According to Mi, VIPKid鈥檚 classrooms are a safe space to make mistakes and teachers encourage students in ways that promote confidence. 鈥淭hat confidence would be the light in the learning,鈥 she added. 鈥淚t would be the lighthouse, and then the students would say, 鈥極h, I can do this. I can speak very confidently鈥.鈥

Noting the advancements and changes brought about by technology and artificial intelligence, Mi said that 鈥渢he human part is always the most important.鈥

As a technology-dependent platform, the online institute has been able to create a more personalized learning experience for students with real-time feedback.

This has also opened up the prospect of AI teacher and student learning assistants, which allow both parties to identify improvement points through comprehensive analytical tools.

To improve the learning experience, VIPKid is leveraging its data to create an AI tutor who works with children to acquire the fundamentals of a language, such as phonetics, freeing up teachers to focus on more advanced topics.

鈥淲hen it comes to technology, I think education can be affordable, accessible and personalized, that I think would unleash the potential of educators, but also truly be able to provide a high-quality learning experience for children across the globe,鈥 she said.

Mi is also discussing the launch of Arabic tutoring programs with local partners: 鈥淭here are so many children around the globe that are curious to learn the language, and also the many expats in the region 鈥 their children and family need to learn Arabic as well.鈥

She added that localizing further would benefit female teachers in the region by 鈥渢he impact and income they can make.鈥

According to Mi, her experience in building a community of teachers with American, Canadian and Chinese teachers suggests that women tend to take up the profession more frequently: 鈥淚 think women are equipped with the loving, passionate characteristics and personality to work with the kids.

鈥淚 can totally see so many women in the Kingdom, in the region, teach children around the globe and share the wonderful culture with the world.鈥

She added that 鈥渢he empowerment of the youth for the future鈥 is a common theme in China and 海角直播.

鈥淥ne thing I see VIPKid contributing is global educational resources and the teacher sources that can help children connect with the world and, at the same time, sharing our culture to the world as well,鈥 she said.

Saudi cookbooks for kids win 鈥楤est in World鈥 Gourmand award
  • 鈥楢klana鈥檚鈥 13 volumes document Saudi culinary and cultural traditions
  • Building a 鈥榞olden age鈥 of literature for kids, publisher tells Arab News

JEDDAH: A children鈥檚 cookbook showcasing 海角直播鈥檚 rich culinary heritage has won one of the world鈥檚 top awards.

Layal Idriss received the 2024 鈥淏est in the World鈥 Gourmand Cookbook Award in Cascais, Portugal, recently for her work as the creative director, publisher, and visual storyteller behind the 鈥淎klana鈥 book series.

The series is an ambitious project documenting the Kingdom鈥檚 culinary culture for children.

Speaking to Arab News, Idriss described the award moment as 鈥渢ruly overwhelming.鈥

The co-founder of Dar Waraqa and Radish House Agency added: 鈥淚 was honored to be invited to speak on the Gourmand stage about 鈥楢klana鈥 from Saudi Books, highlighting Saudi culinary food and culture.

鈥淭o stand there, representing a project that is so dear to my heart, filled me with immense gratitude.鈥

The 鈥淎klana鈥 series, created in collaboration with the Saudi Ministry of Culture鈥檚 Culinary Arts Commission and published by Dar Waraqa, comprises 13 individually designed books, each dedicated to one of the Kingdom鈥檚 provinces.

The series was envisioned as a 鈥渉olistic cultural journey鈥 for children, designed to inform and delight local and global readers alike.

Idriss explained that 鈥渨ith every dot we put on paper, we recognized that we were serving a global readership.鈥

To ensure international accessibility, the books were translated into English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

In her role as creative director, she led a team of four to five artists per book, each handpicked to reflect the cultural tone and visual storytelling of the region they depicted.

鈥淭he goal was not just beautiful illustrations, but visuals that truly captured the essence of the narrative and cultural elements,鈥 she said.

Ensuring artistic and editorial cohesion across all 13 volumes was no small feat: 鈥淒irecting multiple artists while maintaining a unified look and feel was a complex yet rewarding challenge.

鈥淔rom initial sketches to final production, I oversaw every step to guarantee consistency in design and storytelling.鈥

Alongside project manager Mohammed Hasanain, Idriss also prioritized premium production quality.

She said: 鈥淲e focused on high-quality production from illustrations to paper believing that a beautifully made book serves as the best messenger for a vibrant culture.鈥

Speaking about what sets 鈥淎klana鈥 apart globally, Idriss highlighted its unique fusion of cultural depth, educational content and visual excellence.

Each book explores not only food but also local traditions, celebrations and natural resources.

鈥淢any cultural cookbooks might offer recipes, but few delve so comprehensively into the lifestyle, celebrations, and natural resources tied to the food presented through such a rich and consistently high-quality visual narrative,鈥 she said.

For Idriss, this award is validation of a lifelong mission.

鈥淧ersonally, this award is an incredibly encouraging milestone. I鈥檝e devoted my life to bookmaking with a clear vision: to contribute to building the golden age of children鈥檚 literature in 海角直播,鈥 she said.

While 鈥淎klana鈥 focuses on culinary heritage, Idriss believes the same level of dedication must extend to all genres of children鈥檚 literature in the Kingdom.

鈥淭he underlying passion for creating meaningful and beautifully crafted books remains the same,鈥 she added.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards receive submissions from more than 221 countries and regions.

Every year, the awards ceremony is held in a location known for its gastronomic heritage, attracting publishers, chefs, authors, and journalists from across the globe.

With 鈥淎klana鈥 now part of both the Saudi and global culinary conversation, Idriss hopes it will spark a new wave of culturally grounded publishing initiatives across the Arab world.

鈥溾楢klana鈥檚鈥 success provides a strong model. We hope it inspires future projects in the Kingdom and across the region to delve deeper into cultural exploration, setting new benchmarks for quality in publishing.

鈥淲e鈥檙e committed to continuing this journey, sharing our books globally, as we believe they are vital cultural messengers.鈥

RIYADH: The King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives has unveiled the Darah Documents initiative, a project designed to broaden public access to 海角直播鈥檚 historic records and deepen national awareness of their significance.

The initiative, which was launched on Monday, seeks to connect new generations with their heritage and enhance the role of historic documents as primary sources for helping to understand the Kingdom鈥檚 past.

Darah spokesperson Sultan Al-Owairdi told Arab News that the foundation is using technology such as artificial intelligence to modernize archival access.

He said that "automated indexing of historical materials using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and text analysis technologies contributes to reducing human effort and accelerating accessibility."

Additional enhancements include AI-powered search tools, contextual linking of historical landmarks, and real-time multilingual translations to broaden global reach.
