JEDDAH:聽The international community has been responding critically to US President Donald Trump鈥檚 signed declaration on Monday recognizing the illegally occupied Golan Heights as Israeli territory.聽

The unprecedented decision overturns decades of US policy, previously aligned with the UN, that had acknowledged the Golan Heights as Syrian territory.聽

Israel seized the area from Syria in 1967 and annexed it in 1981, in a move not recognized internationally.聽

UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 242 stresses the 鈥渋nadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war.鈥

UNSC Resolution 497 states: 鈥淭he Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect.鈥澛

Trump鈥檚 decision was followed within hours by a wave of international uproar. 鈥淭he American announcement does not change the legal status of the Golan in any way,鈥 the Arab League said in a statement.聽

鈥淭he Golan Heights remains occupied Syrian territory. All this will be addressed at next week鈥檚 (Arab League) summit in Tunisia,鈥 it added.聽

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement: 鈥淭he US move will definitely undermine the possibility of reaching a just and comprehensive peace in the region.鈥澛

It added: 鈥淩egional stability and peace will never be possible as long as Israel continues its occupation of Palestinian and Arab territories.鈥澛

Oman鈥檚 Foreign Ministry said Trump鈥檚 decision 鈥渄oes not change the fact that the Golan Heights is Syrian land,鈥 and 鈥渄oes not help to keep the region stable.鈥

The other Arab Gulf states of Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, all regional allies of Washington, also rejected the decision.

Syria鈥檚 Foreign Ministry called the decision a 鈥渂latant attack on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria,鈥 and a 鈥渉umiliating blow to the international community.鈥澛

A Foreign Ministry spokesman added: 鈥淭rump does not have the right or the legal authority to legitimize the occupation.鈥澛

Syria鈥檚 state news agency SANA reported that thousands of people had gathered in the streets of several cities to protest Trump鈥檚 decision.

Syrian opposition chief Nasr Al-Hariri said Trump鈥檚 decision will 鈥渓ead to more violence and instability, and it will have negative effects on efforts to engineer peace in the region.鈥澛

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said: 鈥淣o one could imagine that a person in America comes and gives land of a nation to another occupying country, against international laws and conventions ... Such action is unprecedented in the current century.鈥

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said a change in the territory鈥檚 status would be a direct violation of UN decisions.聽

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a private meeting in Moscow with Lebanese President Michel Aoun to discuss the US decision.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: 鈥淪uch decisions undoubtedly have negative consequences from the point of view of a settlement in the Middle East and the general atmosphere of a political settlement in Syria.鈥澛

Lebanon said the move 鈥渧iolates all the rules of international law鈥 and 鈥渦ndermines any effort to reach a just peace.鈥澛

The Foreign Ministry added: 鈥淭he Golan Heights are Syrian Arab land, no decision can change this, and no country can revisit history by transferring ownership of land from one country to another.鈥

Aoun said: 鈥淭he leader of a foreign state has no right to dispose of someone else鈥檚 territories this way.鈥

Lebanon鈥檚 Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian said the decision 鈥渋s against all international and UN laws.鈥澛
